Murillo Neto, also known as “Murillinho” is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt 4th Degree under Master Carlos Gracie Jr. being also regarded as one of the top coaches and competitors of the Gracie Barra Team. Murillo conquered many important titles such as IBJJF World Champion (Gi) and (No-Gi), IBJJF American Nationals Champion (No-Gi) and IBJJF Brazilian Nationals Champion by Teams (Gi).

Murillo Neto was born on the December 20th of 1978 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Growing up he was very active as a child, doing many sports including Jiu- Jitsu, Judo, Soccer, swimming and Surf but it wasn’t until 1995 that he fully engaged and committed to Jiu-Jitsu when Professor Marcio Feitosa invited him to train at Gracie Barra and he never left since then, becoming one of the Originals of the #1 Gracie Barra School and Black Belt under Master Carlos Gracie Junior.

Alongside his Jiu-Jitsu career as a fighter Murillo was pursuing his Business School Degree at PUC-Rio (The Catholic University in Rio) which he acquired in 2004. During his college journey, around 2003 the Gracie Magazine Publishing Company leaders, Luca Atalla and Master Carlos Gracie junior, saw an opportunity of using his Jiu-Jitsu skills to be a technical advisor on the Writers Department, considering that he was already a Jiu-Jitsu World Champion with many years of experience and at the same time use his business skills to manage the Financial Department.

Following Master’s instructions in 2004 Murillo started to run the Gracie Camp located in Barra da Tijuca where foreign athletes would go to train in Brazil, which Murillo has been doing since. He has had the opportunity to train some of the best athletes around the world, and many have gone on to win championship titles.

In 2012 Professor Murillo was asked to develop a new Gracie Barra academy in Rio De Janeiro because of his knowledge of the Gracie Barra methodology and experience as a key leader in Brazil. Under Professor Murillo, Gracie Barra Praia has developed into a respected and successful academy, further proving Professor Murillo’s abilities as a leader in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu field.

Because of his deep experience and success within Gracie Barra, Professor Murillo is a critical member of the Gracie Barra team. He has been with Gracie Barra for 28 years of its 37-year history and has been an important part of its foundational moments.

Since 2016 Murillo is managing his life in the United States as a successful fighter running the IBJJF Calendar where he became one more time World Champion in December of 2019 and very often flying back to Brazil in order to check his Jiu-Jitsu School, Gracie Barra Praia and to produce and execute the Gracie Camp events.

THE COACH

Professor Murillo Neto last achievements leading the Gracie Barra Tem on the most recent years. Through his extraordinary habilites on Jiu-Jitsu techniques and vast experience on competitions as an athlete Professor’s career as coach is showing great results on the last recent years. Reaping results on individuals athletes but also taking the team to the podium constantly.

THE REFEREE

Becoming a referee definitely puts you in a very unique spot. Considered to be the most uncomfortable task on the Jiu-Jitsu Industry, not every fighter is willing to put himself on the line but once you are there you not only collect the cons but you are reward with the pros that are giving back to the community a possibility of fair fights, increasing the knowledge staying up to date with the new techniques and summing experience to give back to the students empowering the whole Team.

Note: IBJJF Referees are required to have the rank of Brown or Black Belt, experience on competitions as a coach and as an athlete, updated regular rules course, internship hours as trainee referee in international events and it is mandatory to participate on IBJJF’s referee’s training conventions the International Referee Conventions and take the exams and only refs if it gets the required score.
